EXPATRIATE by Lenelle Moïse http://www.cultureproject.org/ Wine & Cheese Reception & 7pm Claudie and Alphine are sophisticated and sexy African-American performing artists and longtime sister-friends. Disillusioned by grief, homophobia, and "the black glass ceiling," they flee to Europe to heal and realize their starved American dreams. In Paris, they support themselves singing and dancing on the street and quickly rise to infamy and fortune. But as Claudie and Alphine soon discover, for some Black artists living abroad, stardom comes at a steep price. EXPATRIATE is an engaging exploration of black womanhood, friendship, sexuality, and freedom, celebrating characters in the spirit of Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, and the Hottentot Venus. With only a JamMan loop machine at their feet, real-life rising stars Lenelle Moïse and Karla Mosley make intricate, haunting and stirring music as they weave the story of singing group Black Venus's rise to fame. Directed by Tamilla Woodard.
Our “There’s No Place Like Home” benefit party this past January 12th, was highly successful. Many thanks to our local food sponsors (Brooklyn Moon Café, Rockwell’s, Epoca, Black Writers Guild Of America for donating a delicious array of treats. The event was lively and enjoyable, featuring the smooth sounds of Antar Jones, pianist. Also we received a proclamation from Congressman Edward Town for our outstanding service in the tenth district. If you weren’t able to participate at our event, you can still donate online to support our current programs, which include the ANF Short Film Collective, The Capable Tenth Fund and our new play production “Retrospect Of Life” written by Brooklyn’s own Dominique Morisseau. Focused on themes of life and women empowerment, this play is slated to open in June, 2008. Just click on the “Network For Good” link, to donate. Thank you for your continued support. |
