ActNOW Film Archives

The ANF Short Film Collective features the works of rising minority filmmakers and actors. The Collective's mission is to give these artists a public venue for their work as well as feedback on and support for their projects. This monthly screening series has introduced audiences to the works of on-the-verge filmmakers such as Roderick D. Giles, Kiri Davis (A Girl Like Me), Magaly Colimon, Clayton Broomes Jr., Hollie Harper, Craig Williams, Michael A. Pinckney, and actor-turned-filmmaker, Joie Lee (Brooklyn, Jesus Children of America). The Collective's films have starred local and high-profile actors, including Vanessa Williams (HBO's Soul Food, New Jack City, The Cosby Show), Andre Royo (The Wire, Shaft, Law & Order), and male supermodel/actor, Tyson Beckford.

Selected filmmakers also benefit from ActNow's extensive networking community which includes business professionals, film aficionados, writer, producers, actors, and fellow filmmakers. In this regard, the Collective provides a social as well as a creative outlet.

Short Films can be any length between 4 to 30 minutes .

Now, MC Sellout, with his sidekick, Entourage, meets with his Publicist and Manager to think of new ideas for MC Sellout to regain his street credibility and sellout his upcoming album.

True Grits By Shawn Carter Peterson  
A docu-dramedy, uses the urban legend of Mary Woodson's gritty revenge against lover Al Green, as a springboard to explore the issue of cheating. Three directors (Tonya Pinkins, Shawn Carter Peterson, Blaine Teamer) combine documentary with narrative to examine the various facets of cheating. Tony Award winner Pinkins, comedian Kym Whitley (Fun with Dick and Jane, Nutty Professor II), Jonathan Julian (Noah's Arc), Indira Gibson (BUFU) and recording artist Sy Smith round out the dynamic and multi-cultural cast. Comedic and cathartic, people give their definitions of cheating and share their "True Grit(s)" experiences of when love went awry. You don’t know grit about cheating!

TRANSFORMATIONS By Edwin Decena

Powerful, raw and gritty, Javier Molina’s Transformations is a compelling look into the life of three friends and their fateful encounter with suburban teen. What ensues then is a revenge-fueled scheme to out a local menacing drug dealer. But as the scheme unfolds and their plan goes awry things grow more intense.

With it’s gritty documentary feel, Transformations offers superb cinematography and portrays an accurate non-judgmental look at the modern mean streets and offers a raw and honest account on the true nature of crime and violence in the inner city.
